Product review: HAVALON BARACUTA EDGE fillet knife
I recently purchased a Havalon Baracuta (yup that is how it is spelled) fillet knife from Linton Outdoors. Initial inspection showed a flashy knife with a couple of catchy features. The knife is well built, sturdy, and nicely styled. The rubber inserts and contour of the handle reduce the chances of the knife slipping while slashing through a pile of fish. The quick change blade is a great feature. On a new knife it is very tight and care must be used when swapping the blade. The knife comes with replacement blades, and you could even substitute a skinning blades to use your Baracuta to break down your deer or elk. I was concerned about the location of the built in belt clip, but it has never got in my way. The included sheath carries the knife and 4 replacement blades comfortably.
I initially used the knife to fillet some sardines to wrap kwikfish and maglipos lures while salmon fishing. Sardines are very soft, and notoriously difficult to fillet. The Baracuta was the perfect tool for the job. Yesterday my wife, and I fished with some friends and caught a nice pile of Kokanee. Kokes are another soft fleshed fish, and I quickly reduced the pile of fish to a nice bowl of fillets with no issues. Having a scalpel sharp knife made a huge difference.
My only issue (I can't call it a Con: ) is tha knife is so sharp I am constantly in fear of slicing off a finger or other necessary body part. I use a kevlar filleting glove while cleaning fish, and with this knife it is almost a necessity. Use extreme caution while changing the blade and working in close quarters with your digits.
Pros: Replaceable blades ensure a sharp edge at all times, sturdy construction, non-slip handle
Cons: None
